Hello and Welcome to Medi8tor,
Medi8tor is an entertainment blog that is meant to be a resource for entertainers and entertainment professionals. Medi8tor also stresses the importance of balance for entertainers, and entertainment professionals while seeking to foster understanding between entertainment professionals and entertainment consumers. First, let me start off by saying I am SO happy to be back with all my Medi8tors! I have been away for a while, because I am currently strategizing on how to revamp this blog, and how I will launch an exciting new series of content in 2014. But in the mean time, I wanted to encourage you all to watch ‘The Back Story: 12 Years A Slave’ tonight at 9pm EST & PST on BET.
I have seen ‘12 Years A Slave’ a total of three times thus far, and each time I develop a greater appreciation for the fearlessness and bravery depicted in this films very raw, graphic, and honest portrayal of slavery. Personally, I am tired of the slave narrative, and want to explore African American heritage and life beyond this time period. However, as an African American I know that the slave narrative will always be a part of who we are as a people, and that slavery is also a haunting part of the fabric and historical makeup of America's heritage that we are all still cycling through. I can also say that of all the slave films that have been made, this one is definitely my favorite. I feel that it is the movie is the most relatable to modern audiences no matter what their race, and encourages/evokes empathy on the most basic human level. My first time seeing this film was when I attended ‘The Back Story’ taping for the special that will air tonight at 9pm. Since I was present during the taping, I can tell you that the discussion was powerful, engaging and beautiful. I also believe that it will further enhance the open and honest dialogue about race relations and slavery that our country is having based on current events and this dynamic film. In addition I hope that 'The Back Story' special also enlightens, and provides understanding to all races, why incidents like this:
And this….
AND THIS…
Are so
upsetting and offensive to the African American community. (The girl in the
picture above is obviously ignorant of her own history. Really though?)
I am a firm
believer that art can teach, heal, inspire, and provide understanding about
race, culture, and the human condition. '12 Years a Slave’ is a perfect example
of art that does all of the above. Please be sure to go see ‘12 Years a Slave’
currently playing in theatres if you have not seen it, and if you have seen the
movie please feel free to share your opinions and feelings about the movie in
the comments below. Again please be sure to watch ‘The Back Story: 12 Years aSlave’ on BET at 9pm EST & PST.
Until next
time, let’s practice…
Also… tonight
while you are watching the show let’s play “Where is Jessica” and see if you
can find me in the audience. This is the outfit I wore to the taping, so be on
the look out for me.
